Song of the Week: 'Here Comes Your Man'

My kids are ready to kill me, as this is the song of the week: "Here Comes Your Man" by the Pixies.

I don't how I missed this song when it first came out. It's not like I wasn't into the alterna-hipster scene in the early '90s. In an appropriately ironic way, of course. You couldn't be an alterna-hipster in the early '90s without being appropriately ironic.

It was the movie "(500) Days of Summer" where I first heard it.

Paul and I got into a huge debate over that movie, which I thought was at least a little bit charming; it just irritated him. I'm not a huge fan of the whole cute Zooey Deschanel thing, undoubtedly because I recognize its fetching quality -- but I could never pull it off. But the movie itself was interesting and it reminded me of when I was the age of the people in the movie -- when "Here Comes Your Man" came out.

Paul finds ineffectual men irritating, and the male lead in this movie was as pathetic as most of the alterna-hipsters I was hanging with at that time of my life. So my nostalgia just annoyed him.

Perfect running weather: I am wasting it. Bah.

Food dreams

I had a vivid dream yesterday I was eating a bunch of a verboten item.

I think I know where this came from -- on Sunday, in addition to Communion, I accidentally had some honey (my fault for not quizzing the cook, but in my defense it didn't seem like something that would have sweetener).

Later that night, I felt more of an impulse to eat things I shouldn't.

I didn't, but the urge was there.

My new thing for ruffles ...

... inspired my brother to compare my attire to the way David Coverdale would dress.

You have to love little brothers; even when they're pushing 40, they still have to tease the older sister.

Iced tea maker: I'm continuing to enjoy my iced tea maker. I now have a new nightly ritual of making my tea.

Yummy food: I've been making some wonderful things lately, including burgers with jalapenos, Cincinnati chili, grilled chicken breasts and Spanish quinoa.

Exercise: I'm been slacking. Unfortunately. I've got one kid taking summer school classes, which messes up the morning a bit. But that's just an excuse, of course.

Body image -- yet again

I was talking to a petite, athletic woman about her body image demons the other day.

Of course, she has one of the kinds of body shapes that I always admire. But she told me how she had to talk herself into seeing her own shape as beautiful.

It's so sad.

At the same time, she eventually changed her view, over time -- and now she does see primarily her own body type, not the willowy shape she wanted, as attractive.

I'm a bit different. I have a generally positive view of my own shape -- but I also see the beauty in female bodies that are nothing like mine. Healthy always looks nice.
